The artist
Nick Brandt is an English photographer who uses his work to highlight climate change and its impact on people and the natural world.
Brandt studied painting and film in London, England before moving to California, USA, in 1992. During his time in California, he directed several music videos, including Michael Jackson’s Earth Song. While working on this music video, he fell in love with the animals of East Africa and became frustrated about the destruction of their environment.
Influenced by the reality of climate change, he began capturing the negative impact of human activities on earth to bring attention to the cause. And has continued to do so.
The exhibition
Located in an 18th-century townhouse in Petworth, Newlands House Gallery is one of the UK’s youngest leading art galleries. It’s the place to experience world-class modern and contemporary art in the South Downs.
From February 3 to May 29, 2024, the gallery presented Nick Brandt’s The Day May Break + SINK / RISE – an ongoing global series portraying people and animals affected by environmental degradation. The show featured work from chapters one and two, with chapter three SINK / RISE – highlighting rising global sea levels and its legacy – which was exhibited for the first time globally. You can still explore highlights from the exhibition in the Newlands House Gallery guide on the Bloomberg Connects app, under their Past Exhibitions.
